Dear Friends of Israel,
Many Christians now are asking if there is any prophetic, end-times significance to the four, successive, total lunar eclipses that will occur in 2014 and 2015, which also happen to coincide with the Jewish festivals of Passover and the Feast of Tabernacles in each year. Apparently, this arrangement of events has only occurred eight times in the past 2,000 years, and the last three times it occurred simultaneously with important events that affected the Jewish people. The 1493 – 1494 event was associated with the Jewish expulsion from Spain. The 1949 – 1950 event occurred as the modern State of Israel was being founded, while the 1967 – 1968 event was associated with the Six Day War, when Jerusalem was reunited under Jewish sovereignty.
With reference to the end times, Jesus spoke clearly about the signs in the Heavens, such as in Luke 21:25-26. “There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. People will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken.”
However, when we refer to other Biblical passages that speak of end-times prophecies, we see that many other, drastic events must occur, besides the solar and lunar eclipses. In fact, the end of the above-referenced verse says, “… for the heavenly bodies will be shaken.” Thus, there will also be events that arise from cosmic shocks.
The prophet Joel writes in detail about these events in Chapter 2, verses 30 and 31, “I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and billows of smoke. The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD.”
These verses speak explicitly of powerful events that will strike shock and fear in mankind. The phrase, “…billows of smoke” likely refers to volcanic eruptions that will be so powerful, they will cause a darkening of the sun and moon.
Perhaps these current lunar eclipses, occurring on the Jewish holidays, are a sign or warning from God to the Jewish people that decisive events for Israel are right around the corner, especially considering the Jewish concept that solar eclipses symbolize the heathen nations while lunar eclipses symbolize Israel.
It’s certainly good when people who are acquainted with God and His word are observing the signs that the Bible foretells, especially since Joel 2:31 says that God will give warning signs before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord. I believe that warning signs like those occurring right now are given particularly to those who know God’s word, because the world won’t recognize that it might be a message. It would be similar to the time of Abraham, who was called a “friend” of God, when, in Genesis 18:17 God said, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do?”
The Lord himself called us “friends” in John 15:15, “I no longer call you servants, because servants do not know their master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.”
I’m thankful that we are allowed to understand the signs of the times, as friends of our heavenly Father, so that we can arrange our lives accordingly. With heartfelt greetings to those who are bound with me as friends of our Lord,
