Dear Friends of Israel,
On October 6th, it will already be 40 years since the so-called Yom-Kippur War broke out, with Israel on one side against Egypt and Syria on the other.
That war was the toughest one of all for Israel. Egypt and Syria attacked on the holiest day of the Jewish calendar, knowing that the Israeli positions would be poorly manned because the soldiers would be home with their families on vacation. The treacherous attack plan almost worked; it took Israel at least three days to mobilize their troops and deploy them against the attack. Israel however, did receive various warnings of the pending attack. Jordan’s King Hussein, who ruled Jordan at that time, even traveled secretly to Israel in order to forewarn the Israeli government, which was under the leadership of Golda Meir. He was aware of the attack, because Egypt and Syria wanted Jordan to participate in the war as well, to create a three-front war. King Hussein refused however, to participate in another war against Israel.
The Israeli secret service didn’t take the warnings seriously though. The leadership was so convinced of Israel’s own strength, that they believed the Arabs didn’t stand a chance. In particular, Israel believed its Bar Lev Line along the Suez canal was impenetrable. The only mission of the Egyptian soldiers was to cross from the west side of the Suez Canal to the east side and entrench themselves but not push any further forward, which irritated the Israeli leaders.
Egypt’s stated war objective was simply to cross the Suez Canal in order to defy the “myth” that the Bar Lev line was impenetrable.
The only way that Israel could nullify Egypt’s apparent victory was to turn the tables and cross from the east side of the Suez Canal to the west side, a strategy that succeeded under the legendary Commando Ariel Sharon. That led to a stand-off situation.
A lesser-know fact is that Israel was completely dependent on US weapons and ammunition during this phase of the war, because its own warehouses were empty. Therefore, the United States could effectively end the war, which it did.
Since then, the USA is inseparably engaged in the events that take place between Israel and its neighbors. The peace treaties with Egypt and Jordan could only be facilitated under the patronage of the United States. That will also be the case, if a peace treaty is ever arranged between Israel and the Palestinians. There are many who can’t accept the fact that Israel is in a de facto position of dependency on the United States. In any case, we can see how God has fought for His people during the past forty years, in order to uphold His promises.
In the name of Him who stands by His word,
